Research information

The artwork is reproduced in the monograph "Sorin Ilfoveanu", UNARTE Publishing House, Bucharest, 2010.

An accomplished master of shapes construction, Sorin Ilfoveanu has created, throughout time, a cyclical work in which we distinguish landscapes, portraits or compositions featuring symbolic characters. The shape is the means through which the artist coordinates and articulates the visual; and the repetition is used to emphasize symbols (usually human or animal). His works bring together a synergy of lines, whether straight or curved, flat or incisive. Ilfoveanu builds his own world and has the capacity to transpose symbols into the metaphysical pictorial cutting through his canvases, in a tendency to capture notably the essence of things. In the current work, Ilfoveanu mostly opted for four neutral shades, contrasting with the reddish, severe background, brimming with liveliness and vigour. The statuary purity and boredom expressed by the human character appear in antithesis with the vitality of the animal element represented by the feline, caught in the act of hunting. Details are merely synthesized, as they are no longer necessary in this context, in which the author captures within the limits of his canvas a complex action, using only a few brush strokes.
