Research information

The work is reproduced in the album "Retrospective Dimitrie and Aurelia Ghiață. Volume 2. Books", Brândușa Răileanu, Contemporary Literature Press Publishing, Bucharest, 2016, page 152.

Initially, Ghiață enrolled as a volunteer in the fifth military company and worked in the military hospital pharmacy to complete his compulsory service. Later, he took the position of media preparer at the Institute of Serums and Vaccines led by Prof. Ioan Cantacuzino, living in a room of the Institute. He carried out intense artistic activity in his spare time, even managing to attend the art history courses taught by Professor Al. Tzigara-Samurcaș. Doctor Ioan Cantacuzino will accidentally discover Ghiață's room full of paintings and drawings and become interested in his artistic evolution. His exhibition debut took place in 1912, at the Athenaeum, and later D. Ghiață began to frequent Arthur Verona's workshop. At his suggestion, the Ministry of Public Instruction will offer the painter-disciple a study scholarship abroad. Dumitru Ghiață will reach Paris, where he will discover, by visiting the museums, Cézanne's work. The initial contradiction that the Romanian artist feels about the intransigent compositions and violent chromatic of the French painter will slowly turn into admiration. Ghiață will also adopt the geometrization of forms and the adoption of a more daring chromatic palette. He returned to the country in 1915 and participated in the Exhibition of Living Artists, an occasion that will establish a close friendship with Jean Al. Steriadi. A meditative spirit, not at all oriented towards emphasis, Ghiață will extract significant pictorial motifs from the most common circumstances with pragmatic lucidity. In his static natures, the artist's final goal is to harmonize the compositional ensemble. He paints from the model and bets on the most natural articulation of the forms represented. He dedicates a whole series to the villages of Ardeal and traditional houses in the area. He focuses both on rendering elements of nature - the mountains that stand out behind the church; but also the shutters that decorate the blue house or the brick roofs; as well as the characters - inserts here a couple caught from behind, moving slowly down the narrow street.
