PROVENANCE

Mișu Weinberg collection.

Iosif Iser constructs his works in close correspondence with real life. The mundane becomes the central motif of his work, however, it is modified by the artist so that it satisfies the needs of his canvases. He emerges as a satirical illustrator for various national magazines and paints landscapes; yet his favourite subject remains the human face, under various forms. The artist sculpts in colour and in various situations ballerinas, harlequins, dancers or odalisques. He focuses on the expressiveness of the human body, manifesting an obvious preference for femininity. Although captured while carrying out an activity, Iser's odalisque seems to actually exist in an idle state. She appears before the observers in a statuary, almost unmoved posture. In Iser's creation, drawing and colour are complementary, therefore the artist chooses a strong chromatic, with strong accents of red and green. Similarly to other characters created by Iser, the "Odalisque in Interior" enjoys the light of the close-up. The artist focuses particularly on building a natural attitude for the protagonist, as close to reality as possible; he maintains a synthesized construction regarding the depicted face.
