Opera îl reprezintă pe actorul Ion Brezeanu (1869-1940) în rolul lui Ion din piesa "Năpasta", de Ion Luca Caragiale, piesă ce avea premiera la Teatrul Național din București în 1890. Opera era realizată de Camil Ressu la comanda lui Victor Eftimiu, director al Teatrului Național, între 1920 și 1921. Ressu avea să realizeze mai multe variante acestei opere, fiind cunoscute variante în colecția Muzeului Brukenthal și cea a Muzeului Național de Artă.
