Research information

The artwork was part of the "New and Now" exhibition, National Museum Cotroceni, Bucharest, 2025 and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue.

So far, the artistic journey of Adrian Ghenie has been marked by multiple and significant stylistic and thematic transformations, his works becoming increasingly complex, with themes addressing ever more problematic subjects, illustrating the discrepancies between objective reality and subjective memory, the relics of the twentieth century, and the emblematic personalities that have shaken recent history. Time is unforgiving, and memory can be so deceptive that it generates pleasant memories of a somber era, clinging to simple things and ephemeral thoughts, which can overshadow or forget the horrors of the past. These subjective memories can become a danger to current and historical reality. When history is forgotten, it is condemned to repeat itself. Ghenie's works capture and explore precisely the gap that occurs between reality and memory, not to balance it, but to use it as an eternal reminder to the viewer. Ghenie's bleak and desert-like landscapes are marked by the structural tension between abstraction and representation and manage to enchant the viewer and draw him into that dark world teeming with the relics of the past.
