Research information

The artwork was part of the exhibition "Superheroes/Antiheroes – Trends in Romanian Contemporary Art", Art Safari, Bucharest, 2021.

Nicknamed "the weaver of light", artist Cela Neamțu brings a major contribution to the innovation of Romanian tapestry in the universal pantheon through what is called the "Putna stitch", inspired by medieval Romanian embroidery, which she multiplies in her creations. At the same time, Cela Neamțu made a series of 40 paintings with the Romanian traditional "ia", made with patches of authentic folk fabrics, inherited from folklorist Lena Constante. "Lena Constante was a gatherer of folklore, of old fabrics, that she assembled into large decorative panels. She lived to be 94 years old and the cloths collected by her still exist. The women who took care of her wanted to throw them away, to set them on fire (...) I went crazy when I saw how beautiful they were. I got them, and from there on, I started playing with patches. There were larger and smaller patches, and I believe that the idea and the formula I have adopted now, recovering these patches, if they are protected, will live another 500 years in the outfit I confer them, as a form, as interpretations of the "ia". It is not an "ie" to wear, but a "picture ie" to put on the wall, it is not textile, it is a pastel drawing with the decorative elements that an "ie" bears. They are appliqué, little patches, from the authentic patches I inherited from Lena Constante. I made the first two in 2015, when I held an exhibition in Lisbon", the artist explained.
