Research information

The artwork was part of the exhibition "Corneliu Baba și elevii săi" ("Corneliu Baba and his students"), MAMCO Bucharest, 2020. The artwork was part of the exhibition "Impresii din copilărie", National Library of Romania, 2015.

He attends the courses of the Nicolae Grigorescu Art Institute, under the careful guidance of Prof. Corneliu Baba. His paintings share many of the same features with Impressionists and Surrealists. The brush strokes are fine but visible; some forms are rather implied; the use of black tones is limited; the compositions are open, bright, the chromatic being more transparent, with the work as a whole seeming serene, barely broken off from a dream. The "performers" seem to stand in for the archetypal presence of the harlequin - plain, yet clever and prankish. Dorin Coltofeanu’s work inspires visualisation. He imagines the composition in its entirety before applying the finishing touches. Even before the process begins, the artist knows how to distribute his accent colours on the canvas. He works neatly and applies as many layers as needed to reach the desired result. He is more concerned about rendering the visual than the story, and characters succeed the objects in his work.
