În mod tradițional, acest pumnal se purta ca etalon al statutului social, fiind etalat prin prindere cu un șnur de lână împletită, pe umărul drept, peste veșmantul djellaba, la nivelul taliei, suspendat pe verticală, în partea stângă. Koummya este varianta berberă a pumnalului tradițional al popoarelor arabe, cunoscut sub numele de jambiya.
