The two theologians, the Orthodox Gala Galaction and the Anglican Herbert Newell Bate (1871-1941), Archbishop of York, found themselves in the pages of this questionnaire on ecclesiastical and wider issues, devised by the former and answered by the latter. The Archbishopric of York was second only to the Archbishopric of Canterbury in the hierarchy of the Church of England. The manuscript contains both Bate's replies and Galaction's annotations and observations, both written in black ink.
